Volunteers Help Improve Grand Rapids Students’ Reading
- Posted on: Dec 4 2015
Many children in the Grand Rapids area have a hard time reading or understanding words. Although schools and teachers are doing their parts, many need extra help. Volunteers are helping many students learn to read.
“For three consecutive years, we have seen fall to spring growth that exceeded expected growth and also exceeded the comparison group,” said Walter DeBoer, director of the district’s office of information services. “Now that we’ve seen that for three years, that gives us pretty good confidence that what we are seeing is actually representative of the intervention itself and that’s always hard to measure in education. If you focus on growth, achievement will follow.”
