The Sleeping Bear Dunes has been ordered to 40 debris piles this winter in the Port Oneida area. The burns have been ordered to protect against invasive trees and to improve the landscape. The burns have not yet been scheduled but will be closely monitored. The goal is to burn the piles to remove woody material from what used to be primarily open farmsteads and farm fields. It’s expected to allow for “unimpaired viewing of the landscape.”
